Mystery Vaping Illness Update

We posted a few days ago our response to reports of a mystery vaping illness epidemic in the US. In that article, we highlighted the fact that the illness was likely due to illicit e-liquids which contained ingredients that reputable manufacturers either wouldn’t use or are banned from using, in particular Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Well, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has now announced that this is indeed the likely cause. In their announcement entitled, Vaping Illnesses: Consumers Can Help Protect Themselves by Avoiding Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-Containing Vaping Products’, they state:

“many of the samples tested by the states or by the FDA as part of this ongoing investigation have been identified as vaping products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC, a psychoactive component of the marijuana plant) and further, most of those samples with THC tested also contained significant amounts of Vitamin E acetate.”

U.S. FDA

Vitamin E acetate is used in topical consumer products and dietary supplements and shouldn’t be inhaled. Its use in e-liquids is banned under the EU Tobacco Products Directive.

The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will continue to investigate but for now they are no longer recommending everybody stop using e-cigarettes, instead they are now saying:

“we encourage consumers to help protect themselves and avoid buying vaping products of any kind on the street, and to refrain from using THC oil or modifying/adding any substances to products purchased in stores.”

U.S. FDA

Though we do sympathise with anyone caught up in this incident, there is always a risk when purchasing any consumable illicitly or from a source that isn’t reputable.

We hope this incident will not deter anyone from making the switch from smoking to vaping. Let’s not forget the fact that over the past week or so that this incident has been reported, an average of around 9,200 people have died in the US alone from smoking related diseases. Just always choose TPD approved e-liquids when you vape.
